One in ten thousand

What is the secret to become a black belt? The easiest correct answer lies in the tenets of Taekwon-Do:
Perseverance and Indomitable Spirit, among with Courtesy, Integrity, and Self Control

“A black belt is a white belt that never gave up”

Thousands want a black belt.
Hundred think they deserve to have one.
But only a few have the discipline, and tenacity to earn their black belt.
And that’s when they realize the journey is just a beginning.

For those who like math and statistics:

  • For every 10,000 people that join a martial arts Dojang (gym or school), half will drop out in the first six months.
  • Of the 5,000 remaining students about 1,000 will complete one year, then quit. 500 will make two years, but only 100 will make their third anniversary.
  • On average, less than 20 will become Bo Sabum Nim (1st dan - Black belt in Taekwon-Do) and less than 5 will become 2nd dan.

I am 1 in 10,000.

I shall go on teaching, no matter how long a student stays in my Dojang. The lessons they learn will be with them for the rest of their lives, and they will go on to share their lives with others.
